Softball adds midweek doubleheader with Arkansas Tech

Fort Hays State University Softball has added two neutral site games to its 2014-15 schedule to help offset the games canceled due to wintry weather over the last month. FHSU and Arkansas Tech will meet in Wichita, on Tuesday at the Wichita Mustangs Softball Academy Facility. The doubleheader, set for 10 a.m., is a makeup date of last week’s doubleheader that was canceled due to extreme cold at FHSU.FHSU is 3-6 through two weekends of play on the season, last competing in St. Cloud, Minn., against teams from the Northern Sun. For the year, FHSU is hitting .263 for the year with a 3.62 ERA, scoring 4.4 runs per contest. Individually, Tori Beltz leads the team with a .440 average and .760 slugging percentage, blasting two home runs with two doubles and six RBI. Veronica Knittig (.273) has a team-high seven RBI and is tied with Beltz and Amanda Vaupel for the team lead in home runs (two). Samantha Villarreal is second on the team with a .409 average through nine starts, hitting three doubles and showing patience at the plate, drawing seven walks.

In the circle, Paxton Duran (1-3) sports a 3.64 ERA in five appearances, striking out 38 batters and allowing 12 walks. Kelsey Kimminau (1-3) has started four games and struck out 10 while Sara Cochran (1-0) picked up her first career win two weeks ago and has seven strikeouts in 11 innings pitched.

ATU (8-0, 2-0 GAC) is off to a hot start this season, hitting .425 as a team while limiting opponents to a .266 average. Shanna Davidson leads the Golden Suns with a .611 average in eight starts, hitting two doubles with three home runs and a .682 average. Pitcher Victoria Huie is 4-0 on the year with a 0.61 ERA, stirking out 12 batters.
