Tennis ends season at Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. – Fort Hays State Tennis closed its 2023-24 season on Saturday (April 27) with a 7-0 loss to No. 13 ranked Washburn. The Tigers finished 6-15 overall for the season. Washburn improved to 18-4 overall and 6-2 in the MIAA.

Ines Latorre (No. 4) won the first set of her match in singles play, but saw her opponent rally for a second set win and a 10-5 win in the tiebreaker set. Fiorella Mendez (No. 5) won four games within her match, taking two in each set in her final match at FHSU. Grace Unruh (No. 6) won three games in the first set of her match, while Yone Pereiro (No. 3) also took three games in her match with two in the first set and one in the second. Irina Alfonso (No. 2) took a game in each set of her match, while Shreethika Vangala took a game off the No. 5 ranked player in the nation, Maja Jung, in the firs set of her match.

Washburn swept doubles competition by yielding only two games to the Tigers over the three matches contested. The only difference from the usual Tiger lineup was Latorre being paired with Vangala at No. 1 and Mendez being paired with Alfonso at No. 2.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Fort Hays State Tennis fell 7-0 to No. 18 ranked Northwest Missouri State in MIAA play on Friday (April 26) in an indoor match on neutral ground. The Tigers moved to 6-14 overall and 0-7 in the MIAA, while the Bearcats improved to 21-3 overall and 6-2 in the MIAA.

The closest doubles match contested was at the No. 3 position. Grace Unruh and Yone Pereiro fell to their opponent 6-3 in that match. The other two Tiger doubles teams generated three games won combined.

Unruh (No. 6) generated the most games won of any Tiger in singles play with seven, falling 6-3, 6-4. Pereiro won five games, falling 6-1, 6-4. Irina Alfonso (No. 2) won four games, falling 6-3, 6-1. Shreethika Vangala(No. 1) and Fiorella Mendez (No. 5) each took three games, Mendez winning one in the first set and two in the second, while Vangala took all three of hers in the second set. Ines Latorre (No. 4) fell 6-0, 6-0.
