Track sends nine to indoor championship meet

INDIANAPOLIS – The Fort Hays State track and field team had nine individuals selected to compete in a total of 12 events at the 2022 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, announced Tuesday (March 1) by the national office. This year’s national meet is scheduled for March 11-12 and is being hosted by Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kan.

The men had five individuals selected, while the women will send four individuals to the national meet. Both totals are tied for the most indoor qualifiers in a single season during the DII era, while the nine combined is the most in program history indoors.

Philip Landrum and Lyric Holman will each compete in both the 60m dash and the 200m dash. Landrum’s top time of 6.73 in the 60m race is eighth-best in the country this season, while his school-record 21.29 in the 200m dash is 11th-fastest in DII. Holman broke the school record in both races this season. She sits in sixth on the national list in the 60m with a time of 7.45 and 15th in the 200m with a time of 24.32.

Mattie Rossi will also compete in a pair of events after qualifying for both the 60m hurdles and the pentathlon. The junior ranks 11th in DII in the 60m hurdles with a top time of 8.60 this season while entering the pentathlon ranked ninth with a school-record point total of 3,670.

Ryan Stanley and Jacob Clark will represent Fort Hays State in the pole vault competition. Stanley cleared a school-record 17-2.25 over the weekend to win the MIAA indoor championship, second-best in the country, while Clark ranks 16th with a top clearance of 16-4.75.

Nolan Churchman has the second-highest nationally-ranked mark for a Tiger as he enters the heptathlon competition with a school-record point total of 5,433 points.

Alexandra Hart will attempt to defend her national title in the indoor high jump. She enters the competition ranked 15th on the national performance chart with a top clearance of 5-7.75.

The Tigers will also have a competitor in both the men’s and women’s triple jump. Taylor Savolt currently ranks 16th with a top leap of 40-0 while Xavier Robinson is 18th on the men’s side with a season-best jump of 49-3.5.
