Tennis dominates at Sterling

STERLING – Fort Hays State Tennis opened the spring portion of its 2021-22 schedule with a 7-0 shutout win over Sterling College. The Tigers moved to 5-3 overall on the season after a 4-3 mark in the fall. It was the second win for FHSU over Sterling this season, winning 7-0 in the fall as well.

The Tigers won all three doubles matchups and won of their singles matches in straight sets. Irina Alfonso and Nicole Heyn, each from Paraguay, made their debuts with the Tigers after joining the team at the start of the spring semester.

In doubles play, the No. 1 team of Alfonso and Maria Paz Diaz won 6-3, while the No. 2 team of Heyn and Fiorella Mendez won 6-2. Kylie Aufdengarten and Aliyah Frederick blanked their opponents at the No. 3 position 6-0.

In singles competition, Alfonso (No. 1), Diaz (No. 2), and Frederick (No. 5) all allowed just one point to their opponents in 13 games contested. Mendez (No. 4) allowed just one point each set and Heyn (No. 3) allowed two in the first set and just one in the second set. Aufdengarten (No. 6) fought off her opponent in a first-set tiebreak and then shutout her opponent in the second set.

Next up the Tigers host Ottawa University on Saturday (Mar. 5) at 11 am at the FHSU Tennis Courts.
