FHSU Women’s Basketball Defeats UCCS in Dominant Fashion

After beginning the season with two dominant victories, the Fort Hays State University women’s basketball team was back in action on Friday, November 17. FHSU remained undefeated and improved to 3-0 after defeating the UC-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions, 81-51.

Game Recap

FHSU stormed out to an early 20-7 lead after shooting nearly 70% from the field in the first five minutes. The Tigers led by as many as 25 in the opening quarter and had a 36-13 advantage going into the second quarter. Tatyana Legette led the Tigers with 12 points in the first quarter and Taylor Rolfs added 11 as Fort Hays shot 61.9% from the field to start the night. The first quarter scoring barrage featured nine assists, five made three-pointers, and 11 forced turnovers by FHSU.

Kacey Kennett drilled back-to-back threes early in the the second quarter, and the Tigers took a 48-16 lead. UCCS followed with a 7-0 run, but FHSU still led by 25. Fort Hays was ahead 52-28 at halftime. The Tiger defense capitalized with 29 points off of 18 first-half turnovers. Legette, Rolfs, and Whitney Clampitt were all in double-figure scoring in the opening half.

Both teams struggled from the field in the third quarter, but the Tigers still held a 62-35 lead heading into the final quarter. FHSU found their groove again in the fourth, and began the quarter on a 12-3 run.

By the Numbers

Leading the Tigers was Legette with 19 points and eight rebounds. Clampitt also added 19 points. Rolfs finished with 15 and Kennett rounded out the Tigers in double figures with 14.

For UCCS, Golla Maddie was the sole Mountain Lion in double figures with 10 points.

FHSU shot 40.3% from the field and held UCCS to 28.6%. The Tigers led by as many as 36 on the night. Fort Hays also dished out 17 assists, and scored 36 points off 26 UCCS turnovers.

Fort Hays is currently outscoring opponents by an average of 35.3 points per game through three games.

Looking Ahead

UCCS (0-3) will take on the University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers (3-0) from Gross Memorial Coliseum tomorrow at 2 PM. Fort Hays (3-0) will face the Newman University Jets (4-1) following the conclusion of UCCS vs. UNK. Scheduled start time is 4 PM.
