Long Earns All-America First Team Honors at Linebacker from D2CCA

FHSU Sports Information Department

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Fort Hays State senior linebacker Brock Long has been selected to the D2CCA All-America Football Team for the 2015 season. Long is a First Team All-America selection at linebacker, putting together one of the most impressive all-around defensive efforts in the country this season. The D2CCA All-America Team is voted on by sports information directors throughout NCAA Division II nationwide.

Long had a tremendous senior season anchoring the Tiger defense at inside linebacker. He set a new school record for tackles in a season with 171, passing the former mark of 164 set by Alex Whitehill in 2011. But tackles were not the only category he soared in as he led the MIAA in tackles for loss, sacks, and forced fumbles at the end of the regular season.

Upon completion of the Mineral Water Bowl, Long finished the year with 21.5 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, and four forced fumbles to go with his 171 tackles. He ranks fourth nationally in total tackles, 13th in tackles for loss, 17th in sacks, and seventh in forced fumbles. It is rare to see a linebacker inside the top 20 of all four of those categories nationally.

Long led the team in tackles in nine of the 12 games this season. He averaged 14.3 tackles per game and reached double figures in tackles 10 times.

Long ranks fifth on the career tackles list for the NCAA era at FHSU with 264, accomplishing the feat in just two years. He is tied for 10th on the career sacks (13.5) and career tackles for loss (26.0) lists at FHSU for the NCAA era. For single-season accomplishments at FHSU, he is now the record holder for tackles and tackles for loss, while tying for second in sacks.

Long helped FHSU to its first postseason game in 20 years and an overall record of 8-4. FHSU finished third in the MIAA at 8-3.

Long was among eight players from the MIAA to be named to the D2CCA All-America Team. He was one of six to be named first team. Long was one of three players from FHSU to earn D2CCA All-Super Region 3 First Team honors, joining running back Shaquille Cooper and safety Daniel Lindsey. Matt Erbert was a second-team all-region selection.
