Built with barbed wire and concrete, The Berlin Wall, stretching for about 30 miles,  was a Cold War symbol which separated East and West Berlin, preventing people from leaving East Germany. On Aug. 13, 1961, Berlin was divided as East Germany sealed off the border between the city’s eastern and western sectors in order to halt the flight of refugees.
