Fort Hays State University’s Financial Aid Office celebrated National Financial Aid Day on Tuesday with an event publicizing Fort Hays scholarship opportunities.

Assistant Director of Financial Assistance Angela Delzeit and other members of the Financial Aid Office walked students through the process of completing the Fort Hays General Scholarship Application.

How to apply for scholarships

Students can access the form by logging into their Workday, going to “myFHSU,” and then under the “Financials” tab, there is a box titled “Financial Aid.” The link to the application is in that box.

“Scholarships are so important because they give students another avenue to help pay for their education,” Delzeit said.

Delzeit also emphasized that, unlike loans, scholarships do not have to be repaid.

“They’re not taking out loans that are accruing interest,” Delzeit said. “I mean, free money is better than having money that you have to pay back.”

The FHSU General Scholarship Application works by matching students with eligible scholarships.

“After filling out the form, you’ll be matched with specific scholarships that you may meet one, two or all the criteria for, and then it allows you to look through those to see if that scholarship fits you,” Delzeit said.

Each scholarship has unique requirements, often based on donor preferences, and some may require additional materials.

The priority scholarship deadline is Nov. 15, and the final deadline is Feb. 15.

“I would apply as soon as possible for your scholarships so you don’t forget,” Delzeit said. “Sooner is always better.”

New scholarships may appear after you submit your general application, so Delzeit recommends checking back before the deadline.

“There are donors all the time that are creating scholarships for students, so you want to make sure that you have absolutely put your name in for every single scholarship that you may meet the criteria for,” Delzeit said.

Hailey Moldonado, a freshman studying pre-med biology, attended the event and attested to the value of the scholarship program.

“The Fort Hays general scholarship does work,” Moldonado said. “I was able to get a couple thousand dollars from it.”

While Moldonado now has a full-ride scholarship and does not need the general scholarships, she said the information was very helpful.

“My boyfriend is looking for scholarship opportunities, so I wanted to get as much information as possible,” Moldonado said. “Scholarships can really make a difference.”
