Fort Hays VFW Post 9076 is serving a Lenten Menu every Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in its facility on 2106 Vine St in Hays. The menu features traditional Lenten meals like fish, noodles, beans, cole slaw and hush puppies, and is open to the public.
Auxiliary president Jason Hudsonpillar plans the yearly occasion for Hays’ Catholic population.
“Since we’re in such a big Catholic community, we try to do this during Lent for the people that will follow the guidelines of not eating meat on Fridays,” he said. “This goes until Good Friday.”
The menu has been served since March 7, and its last day will be April 18, which marks the religious holiday.
“All the public is welcome [to eat here],” Hudsonpillar said. “It’s primarily veterans and auxiliary members back in the kitchen putting the meal together, and it makes me feel great. It’s all volunteer help, so I think it’s a great thing we do.”
