As students and staff return from a much-needed break, it’s easy to miss the slower days with no alarms, deadlines or packed schedules. Getting back into the swing of things and pushing through the rest of the semester until May can feel overwhelming at first.
Luckily, there are a few simple strategies that can help make the transition smoother and bring motivation back.
Instead of fixating on everything that needs to be accomplished before the semester ends, try setting short-term goals. Don’t think too far ahead; only one to two weeks at a time. This approach makes routines easier to rebuild and keeps tasks from feeling so daunting.
Whether it’s blocking out time each day to study or gradually filling in a planner as the week unfolds, having a structure can make a big difference. Being mindful of productive time and downtime also helps shift the focus from “lost free time” to celebrating progress and balance.
Once those short-term goals are in place, it’s important to intentionally schedule time to recharge. Taking breaks during busier days can help prevent burnout, even if it’s something small like stepping out of the Tebo Library study space for a quick walk. Short walks or mental breaks can help ease the stress of long study sessions and make tackling assignments more manageable.
Returning to class after a break can also be tough, especially for students who feel confident teaching themselves the material. However, staying engaged during class can make a noticeable difference.
Faculty at FHSU genuinely want students to succeed, and reaching out early can prevent small setbacks from turning into bigger problems. Saying, “I’m falling behind,” might be uncomfortable, but it’s far easier than dealing with the consequences of failing a class you thought would be an easy win.
With a little structure, regular breaks and open communication, finishing the semester strong remains well within reach. For those experiencing difficulty re-establishing a productive routine, Fort Hays State University offers a wide range of campus resources.
FHSU success coaches provide personalized support to students by helping set academic and personal goals, developing effective study strategies and navigating challenges in order to enhance overall success. Additional information about success coaching can be found here.
For students seeking emotional or mental health support beyond academic concerns, Health and Wellness offers counseling services. Scheduling a few last-minute counseling sessions in the semester can support overall well-being and help students stay focused as they move through the final stretch of the semester. Free, on-campus counseling services can be found here.
