Hays High School will present “The Sound of Music” as its spring musical this weekend.
The “Sound of Music” features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, based on “The Trapp Family Singers” by Maria Augusta Trapp. The Oscar-winning film celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2025.

The production stars senior Johanna Jones as Maria and senior Bryson Weber as Captain Georg von Trapp, along with many other talented actors, including junior Alexis Ryan as Liesl and junior Harley Foarde as Rolf Gruber. Along with the high school students, this year, children from the community have been added to the cast to play the younger Von Trapp children, Kurt, Marta, and Gretl.
“We had open auditions for the children. We reached out to elementary school music teachers and asked them to encourage students they thought would be a great fit for the show,” said music director Alex Underwood.
Underwood said that while they had to be conscientious of the learning ability and general capacity of the younger actors, they were fantastic to work with and will be amazing to see on stage.
Along with acting, Hays High involves its students in every part of the musical production. This year, as in the past three years, the musical’s poster has been designed by Senior Kay Walburn. Students also help make up the backstage crew and orchestra, as well as doing technical work and other supportive roles.
Shows will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Hays High School’s Performing Arts Center at 2300 E. 13th Hays.
More information can be found on the Hays High School website or Hays High School Music & Theatre Facebook page. Tickets can be purchased online before the show or at the door.
