The Fort Hays State University Biology Club hosted its annual Plant Sale last week in the Memorial Union. The event was a fundraiser that also celebrated Earth Day by promoting gardening. The club had a range of options for sale, including house plants and garden plants. The variety of plants available was thanks to the Biology Club Officers, who take the time and care to grow seeds each year. They utilize FHSU’s Green House to nourish the seeds into flourishing plants.
“I personally love this project that we do. Getting to watch seedlings sprout and turn into the giant plants we sell is so fun,” said Audrey Rymer, club president. “I know several of our officers have wanted to get our own greenhouses eventually to continue the same thing at our future homes.”
Not only is the process rewarding mentally, but it saves money. This allows the club to sell the plants for a discounted price, also saving money for others.
“We buy the seeds for about $1-$2 a pack,” she said. “This year, our large tomato plants sold for $7. At Walmart, a plant half that size costs $15.”
Their house plants sold for just $3, perfect for students to add to their dorms and homes, improving air quality.
The plant sale is an effective fundraiser for other activities the club sponsors. In addition to the plant sale, the Biology Club also hosts an elementary education day, campus clean-up days, brings in guest speakers, and buys cords for their graduating seniors. These funds allow them to get supplies and put on high-quality events that leave an impact on other students, the next generation, and community members. These things also help them grow the biology community.
“The biology club is an organization that tries to help students, or others, interested in biology find what field of biology they’re interested in,” Rymer said.
