Fort Hays Women in STEM teamed up with Big Brothers Big Sisters serving Ellis County to host Science with Big Brothers Big Sisters inside Tomanek Hall on Friday. The event brought families to a condensed science fair conducted by the Physics and Chemistry Clubs, who performed experiments to teach various disciplines in science.

This was the second collaboration between Women in STEM and Big Brothers Big Sisters to stoke an interest in science in children.

“One of the things we’re trying to get at with this is getting kids into the labs at a young age,” said Emily Redding, senior and Women in STEM treasurer. “We amped up our production this year. We invited Chemistry, Physics and Natural Resources clubs to add more lab experiences and hands-on stuff.”

Redding noted the addition of tasking children with identifying animals.

“We have mammal madness where we match mammal skins to skulls,” she said. “We’re also doing camera trap I Spy, which came about from a research project done in the Fall with Snapshot USA. That one, the kids got real camera trap footage, and they were asked to identify all the mammals that they could see in the photos.”

Redding was happy with the turnout of families who came to engage in their new activities and hopes to continue this endeavor.

“We would love to keep doing this in the future,” she said. “[I would] especially love to keep doing the lab activities and, hopefully, branching out and getting to do more cool stuff with it.”
