Communication and engagement were central themes of the guest speaker at Thursday night’s Student Government Association meeting at Fort Hays State University.

J. David Macey, dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at FHSU, shared insights about the college’s transformative journey. Macey discussed the college’s ambitious efforts to reinvent itself, marked by a thoughtful revision of its mission statement, the introduction of innovative programs and the expansion of existing courses.

The reinvention is rooted in an examination of the college’s core identity and purpose, as it actively explores the fundamental questions of what it does and why those pursuits matter in today’s educational landscape.

“We are committed to the engagement of our communities in our world,” Macey told the student senators.

In addition, the college recently applied to the Carnegie Foundation, emphasizing its commitment to community engagement. Macey said the institution’s mission is to effectively communicate and interpret diverse stories, fostering a deeper understanding within the community.

“The work of arts, humanities and social sciences is being an expert by telling stories and interpreting stories,” Macey said.

He also expressed an interest in encouraging students to share perspectives on how the college can best support its growth and aspirations.

During the Open Forum, several organizations articulated requests for increased funding allocations to support initiatives.

Epsilon Pi Tau, a service-oriented group, said it needed additional funds to cover travel expenses for outreach trips, which are crucial to its mission of community service and engagement.

The Associated General Contractors highlighted a desire for a budget increase targeted at enhancing networking opportunities within the club. Members believe greater financial support would enable them to organize events and activities that foster professional connections among members.

The American Institute of Graphic Arts said it needs financial assistance for an upcoming trip to Mexico, which would include visits to local studios. It stressed the venture is not only a chance for artistic inspiration but also a significant networking opportunity that could bolster members’ career prospects.

Panhellenic/Interfraternity Council sought funding to facilitate participation in various conferences and speaker events, which the group said play a pivotal role in personal and professional development.

Teacher in Signing expressed an urgent need for financial support to cover hotel accommodations for its annual competition, an event that showcases its dedication and skill in this unique form of communication.

The Spanish Club requested assistance for hotel stays and proper dance attire for the cultural dances it organizes, which serve to promote cultural awareness and community engagement.

Sigma Alpha said additional funding is needed to enable a larger delegation to attend an annual leadership seminar. The group believes the experience is invaluable for the development of members’ leadership skills.

Martial Arts said funding would specifically aid in organizing fall and spring seminars, which not only improve the skills of participants but also enhance the community’s engagement with martial arts.

The Rodeo Club requested an increased budget to cover various expenses, including mileage, cattle procurement, equipment and feed. Members said the resources are vital for continued participation in competitive rodeo events.

Later in the forum, it was clarified many of the funds previously allocated were a result of reserved budgets due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which had restricted activities and expenditures. As financial resources start to normalize, organizations are finding available funds are decreasing, making requests for increased allocations more pressing.
