After four games on the road, the FHSU women returned home to play against Northeastern State and MIAA newcomer Arkansas-Fort Smith. The Tigers won both games easily, extending their winning streak to seven and improving their overall record to 20-2 overall and 11-2 in the MIAA.
Olivia Hollenbeck led the Tigers with 22 points and nine rebounds in the win against Northeastern State and poured in 27 points against Arkansas-Fort Smith. Hollenbeck is having her best season at FHSU this year, averaging career highs in numerous categories, including 17 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game.
Hollenbeck is also shooting a career-high percentage from the field at 63.8%. Her numbers put her as the number three scorer in the MIAA, as she is also ranked second in field goal percentages and second and third in steals and blocks, respectively.
Hollenbeck was happy with her performance over the last couple of games.
“I think my team, all around, we’re pretty good at getting the ball to someone when they’re hot, and so I think that’s amazing,” she said. “They’ll (the shots) fall really well this week, and they’ll probably have someone there making shots for the next week. And that’s kind of the beauty of this.”
Fort Hays controlled both games this weekend with ease, taking an early lead and maintaining it throughout both games. Hollenbeck was not the only Tiger to perform well. Katie DeGarmo scored 15 and 23 points over the two games and had a positive influence on the team as well.
The Tigers did struggle from the three-point line over both games, only shooting 5-25 from beyond the arc. However, inside the arc, Hollenbeck had an impressive shooting percentage, going 19-25 through both contests. She said she had a size advantage that helped her reach those impressive numbers.
“I think I did (have a size advantage) on today’s game and on Thursday, too, and that’s something. I feel like there are usually a few big girls on every team in our league. So that’s definitely something we’re trying to take advantage of this week,” Hollenbeck said.
While the team continues to win, Hollenbeck keeps looking for ways to improve everyone’s individual games.
“I feel like we got going really well at the beginning of both games and then I think in the third quarter, we kind of settled in almost a little bit too much,” she said. “So I think that’s something we could have done a little bit better. Just keep that consistency and keep that aggressive game.”
