The Hays Public Library hosts many events, from active reading for preschoolers to board game nights for teenagers and coffee hour in the mornings for adults. They also host a variety of book clubs for all ages.

HPL has also partnered with Forsyth Library and the MakerSpace for the “How-To” series. The first How-To event took place earlier this year, where students could learn how to cook without stovetops.

Two library representatives taught the demonstration which was targeted toward college students.

The latest How-To presentation took place at the library on Tuesday and discussed renter friendly home repairs. Nathan Howard, a professor at Fort Hays State University and a teacher in the Applied Technology department, was the speaker for this presentation.

He started the presentation by introducing himself and how he works at the college, then moved on to show different types of tools for various kinds of jobs.

Some of the tools mentioned were common, like a hammer, screwdriver, measuring tape, and pliers. Along with the tools, Howard demonstrated how to use a digital voltage tester, which measures the electrical voltage that is present in a circuit.

Howard also explained some minor house repairs someone could do without spending hundreds of dollars getting professionally fixed. For example, the first repair he explained was how to fix a hole in the drywall, and that’s usually an easy fix.

The next couple of repairs that could be done by yourself were changing out the floor flange on a toilet and unclogging a sink drain.

The next event going on in the how-to series takes place at 6 p.m. on December 10 at Hays Public Library and will be hosted by the library along with Chestnut Street Floral.
