Ichabods sweep FHSU softball

Fort Hays State fell twice on Friday (April 5) to Washburn in a conference doubleheader at Fleharty Family Field. The No. 24 ranked Ichabods improved to 34-10 overall and 15-5 in the MIAA with wins by the scores of 13-6 and 2-0. FHSU is now 15-17 overall, 3-11 in the MIAA.

Game 1: Washburn 13, Fort Hays State 6
The day’s first contest featured a total of 19 runs and 27 hits between the teams. The Ichabods took an early 4-0 lead and the Tigers could never catch them. The Ichabods scored runs in every inning by the seventh with one in the first and second, two in the third, fourth, and fifth, and five in the sixth. FHSU pulled within one at 4-3 with a 3-run third, but that is as close as it would get.

With Washburn up 4-0 through two and a half innings, the Tigers made the contest interesting for a bit when Regan Curry and Carly Stuke walks set up a two-RBI triple by Peyton Shepard down the left field line in the third. Alondra Dominguez followed with a single to knock in Shepard to make the game 4-3.

Down 8-3, the Tigers got back within three at 8-5 in the fifth when Stuke and Shepard singles set up a two-RBI single by Dominguez. FHSU had the bases loaded with two outs, but a pop out ended the threat.

Washburn broke the game open with five in the sixth to lead 13-5, but FHSU picked up its final run on an RBI double by Dominguez in the sixth after Audrey Gillespiestarted the inning with a single.

Morgan Schmidt took the loss for FHSU, going 2.1 innings in her start. She allowed four runs. Emma Montoya allowed eight (six earned) in 3.0 innings of relief. Bailey Carlson also allowed a run in 1.2 innings of relief.

Sadie Walker threw a complete game for the Ichabods, allowing 11 hits and three walks with just two strikeouts. She moved to 19-5 on the season.

Game 2: Washburn 2, Fort Hays State 0
Game two was a pitcher’s duel between Jaycee Ginter of Washburn and Savanah Egger of Fort Hays State. Egger allowed only one earned run in the contest, but the Tiger offense had a tough time solving Ginter who had a no-hit bid going through 5.1 innings.

Audrey Gillespie recorded the Tigers first hit in the sixth with a double to right center and a two-out single by Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson in the seventh was the only other hit for the Tigers.

Two errors by the Tigers in the second inning allowed the Ichabods to score their first run of the game. They tacked on one more in the third with three singles, the final being an RBI by Alexis Tanguma.

Ginter struck out six and walked just one batter moving to 15-5 on the season with her complete game shutout. Egger moved to 9-9 on the season, allowing six hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

Fort Hays State will be at home again next weekend for another pair of MIAA doubleheaders. The Tigers face Lincoln on Friday, April 12, then Central Missouri on Saturday, April 13.
