Women’s soccer adds newcomers

Fort Hays State Women’s Soccer announced the signing of nine individuals for the 2024 season. Head coach Tyson John has added five transfers and four true freshmen.

Below is information on each of the commitments. All five transfers are already enrolled at FHSU for the spring semester, while one freshman is already on campus as well. Three of the four freshmen will join the team prior to the 2024 fall season.

Chelsea Bowen, Jr., 5-4, Defender, Alta Loma, Calif. / Alta Loma HS / Chaffey College
Chaffey College: As a sophomore in 2023, earned all-conference first team honors as a center back…Helped her team to the CCCAA Final Four in 2023 and the CCCAA championship game in 2022…As a freshman, started as a midfielder and earned all-conference first team and all-region honors.

Alta Loma HS: Served as a team captain her senior year, earning all-conference first team honors…As a junior earned all-conference honors and helped her team to the state finals.

Sydney Cotter, Jr., 5-4, Forward/Midfielder, West Covina, Calif. / South Hills HS / Chaffey College
Chaffey College: As a sophomore in 2023, earned All-America honors from United Soccer Coaches by recording 13 goals and three assists, helping her team to the CCCAA Final Four…Two-time all-conference selection, while also earned all-region and all-state honors.

South Hills HS: Two-time all-league selection and two-time academic all-league selection…Earned her league’s Offensive MVP honors…Named the Foothill-Citrus Scholar Athlete of the Year…Named to All-CIF Southern Section…South Hills High School Athlete of the Year honors.

Kenzee Godwin, Sr., 5-3, Forward, McPherson, Kan. / McPherson HS / College of Saint Rose
College of Saint Rose: Played in 13 matches in 2023 as a junior for a team that earned the No. 1 seed in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament and finished 20-0-2 overall…Recorded four points for the season with two goals…Saint Rose was ranked No. 1 in the nation for two weeks of the 2023 season.

Butler CC: All-KJCCC and All-Region First Team selection in 2022 for the Grizzlies, finishing the year with a team-best 19 goals to go with eight assists…Led the Grizzlies in points in 2022 with 46…As a freshman in 2021, recorded 10 goals and eight assists for 28 points.

McPherson HS: All-state first team selection in 2021 as a senior in Kansas Class 4-3-2-1A…All-state second team selection in 2019.

Makenzie Hood, So., 5-7, Defender, Spring Hill, Kan. / Spring Hill HS / University of Northern Iowa
Northern Iowa: Played in a total of three matches at UNI and recorded an assist in 2023 in a win over Viterbo University…Member of the Missouri Valley Conference Honor Roll.

Spring Hill HS: Helped her high school to Kansas Class 5A regional titles in 2018 and 2020…All-league first team selection in 2021…Served as a team captain…Also participated in track and field as a member of the 4×400-meter relay team.

Jamie Kerkvliet, Jr., 5-9, Goalkeeper, Otsego, Minn. / Rogers HS / Upper Iowa University
Upper Iowa: Played in 11 matches over two seasons for the Peacocks, making seven starts in goal…Posted a .773 save percentage as a sophomore in 2023 and a .708 save percentage as a freshman in 2022.

Ella Buff, Fr., 5-8, Forward, Kansas City, Kan. / Piper HS
Piper HS: All-state honorable mention selection in Kansas Class 5A by the KHSSCA…All-United Kansas Conference First Team selection in 2023…Has 32 career goals in her first three years of high school, including 18 as a junior in 2023.

Taylor Hill, Fr., 5-7, Forward, Castle Rock, Colo. / Castle View HS
Castle View HS: Played in 21 matches over the last two seasons, accumulating three goals…Plays club soccer for Rapids 05 Girls ECNL in Denver.

Jessica Russo, Fr., 5-3, Defender, Spring Hill, Kan. / Spring Hill HS
Spring Hill HS: All-league second team selection during both her sophomore and junior seasons (2022 and 2023).

Berkley Sparks, Fr., 5-4, Midfielder, Heath, Texas / Rockwall-Heath HS
Rockwall-Heath HS: Two-time all-district selection, including second team honors in 2022-23 and honorable mention honors in 2021-22…Three-time academic all-state selection…Serves as a team captain.
