Porsch wins; Tigers place five

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – Seven members of the Fort Hays State Women’s Wrestling team competed unattached at the Spire Classic this past Friday (Jan. 26). Marissa Porsch was champion of the 170-pound weight class, while Piper CaddenAshlynn GoodwinGabby Hampton, and Lyndsey Buechman all placed in their respective weight classes.

Porsch went 3-0 in the 170-pound class, scoring technical falls all the way through her tournament run. She surrendered just two points (12-2) to her quarterfinal opponent, Jocelyn Ambriz of Southeast Community College, the No. 6 ranked wrestler at the weight class in the NJCAA. She blanked her final two opponents by scores of 10-0 and 12-0. Her semifinal win was over Aime Hernandez-Perez of York University, the No. 12 ranked wrestler at the weight class in the NAIA, then knocked off unranked Jaclyn Daley of Baker University in the final.

Cadden and Goodwin each placed second in their weight classes. Cadden went 3-1 in the 136-pound class, blanking her first three opponents with 10-0 tech falls before coming up short in a 10-6 decision against Madeline Barton of Quincy University in the finals. Goodwin also went 3-1 in the 143-pound class, scoring a fall and a pair of 10-0 tech falls to reach the finals where she lost by fall to Athena Wilden of William Jewell, the No. 3 ranked wrestler in the NCAA.

Hampton picked up a fourth-place finish in the 116-pound class. She went 4-2 on the day, scoring a fall and a pair of 10-0 tech falls to reach the semifinals. She lost an 8-8 tie on criteria in the semifinals before scoring yet another 10-0 tech fall in the consolation semifinals, but then dropped her final match by tech fall.

Buechman posted a 2-2 record on the day in the 191 class. She scored a forfeit win in a match where she had the lead, then won her fifth-place match by fall.

Also competing in the tournament were Hannah Selle(109) and Noelle Peters (116). Both went 0-2 for the day.
