Fort Hays State Women’s Wrestling had 15 individuals compete unattached in the first-ever Bob Smith Women’s Open on Sunday (Dec. 3) at Gross Memorial Coliseum. Three Tigers, including Piper Cadden (136), Ashlynn Goodwin (143), and Lila Bloomer (170), won individual titles, part of 12 individuals that earned placement in the tournament.
Goodwin went 4-0 in her 32-person bracket at 143 pounds. She did not surrender a point until the championship match, picking up two 10-0 tech falls in her first two matches of the day and a quick fall in 19 seconds in the semifinals. She knocked off Anastacia Fucci of the Colorado State wrestling club in the championship by a score of 8-2.
Cadden and Bloomer both went 3-0 on the day. Cadden was part of an 8-person bracket at 136 pounds and Bloomer won a 4-person round-robin format at 170 pounds. Both had impressive paths to their individual titles on the day. Cadden surrendered nothing to her opponents on the day with a 10-0 tech fall in the opening round, a pin in 35 seconds in the semifinals, and another 10-0 tech fall in the final over Apollonia Middleton of Colorado Mesa in the final. Bloomer dominated as well, scoring a 13-2 tech fall in her first match, then a pair of pins in 55 seconds and 1:46 to claim the title of the round-robin format. Goodwin, Cadden, and Bloomer gave the Tigers a perfect 3-for-3 performance in matches where an FHSU wrestler reached the finals.
Third-place finishes went to Arianna Ortiz (101) and Katelyn Schmidt (143). Ortiz went 3-1 on the day and dominated in her wins, scoring a 10-0 tech fall in the first round before moving to the consolation bracket with a semifinal loss. She bounced back for another 10-0 tech fall and then pinned her opponent in the consolation final in 3:26. Schmidt went 3-1 on the day as well, scoring a 10-0 tech fall in the first round before getting pinned by the aforementioned Fucci in the semifinals. She bounced back with a 1:35 fall and an 11-3 decision to claim third.
Fourth place finishers for the Tigers were Isabell Ortiz(116), Chloe Mader (155), and Lyndsey Buechman(191). Ortiz was 3-2 on the day in a 32-person bracket, while Mader and Buechman went 2-2 in 8-person brackets. Ortiz scored a tech fall, fall, and decision for her three wins. Mader had a fall and a decision for the day. Buechman’s pair of wins were falls, and she came up just short on criteria in a 2-2 tie in her placement match.
Earning fifth-place honors were Hannah Selle (109), Josiah Ortiz (116), Gabby Hampton (123), and Addison Broxterman (136). Selle, Ortiz, and Broxterman all had two wins on the day, while Hampton picked up one. Though she didn’t place, Noelle Peters also picked up a win on the day.
