By FHSU SPORTS INFORMATION

KEARNEY, Neb. – The Fort Hays State wrestling team had two individuals reach the podium at the Younes Hospitality Open Saturday (Nov. 18) at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds. Tereus Henry, the third-ranked wrestler in Division II at 197 pounds, placed fourth, while senior Cody Hicks earned his first placement of the season with a sixth-place finish in the Elite 165-pound bracket.

Henry reached the podium for a second weekend in a row after going 4-2 on the day. He picked up two decisions and a sudden victory win to reach the semifinals, where he lost to eventual champion Camden McDanel by a narrow 5-3 decision. He then reached the consolation finals via a medical forfeit before dropping a 6-5 decision on a last second stall call.

Hicks fell early to the 10th-ranked wrestler at 165 pounds before picking up a pair of wins on the back side of the bracket to reach the medal round. He racked up a 17-1 technical fall before tallying a 9-5 decision in the next round. He dropped a tightly-contested 3-0 decision in the consolation semifinals before falling again to 10th-ranked Elijah Valdez in the fifth-place match.

Bryce Westmoreland was the only other Tiger to pick up more than two wins on the day, finishing one win shy of reaching the podium with a 4-2 afternoon in the Elite 184 bracket. He picked up a first-period pin in his first bout of the day before dropping a technical fall to move to the consolation bracket. He then picked up three-straight wins, including another quick pin (1:10) and two decisions, before losing by technical fall in his sixth match of the day.

Matthew Rodriguez also picked up a pair of wins via fall in the Elite 184 bracket, reaching the quarterfinals after pins in 39 seconds and 4:35. He then succumbed to a sudden-victory loss against a competitor from the University of Nebraska before losing to Westmoreland in the consolation bracket, 7-2.

Juan Urbina recorded a pair of bonus-point victories in the Elite 174 bracket, recording a first-period pin in his first consolation bout before recording a 15-7 major victory in the next round. He finished the day 2-2 overall.
