The Fort Hays State volleyball team competed in a midweek match against instate rival Emporia State Tuesday night in Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers kept the match close through the first three sets, but ultimately fell 3-1 (26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 25-12).

Emporia State had the early lead in the first set but the Tigers had a rally of their own giving the Tigers a chance to tie the set late at 20. But Emporia State took a time out and the Hornets capitalized winning the set 26-24.

In the second set, the Tigers started out hot leading the Hornets 9-4 but Emporia came back to tye the match at 18 before leaving the Tigers behind winning 25-20.

Fort Hays won the third set after a late rally pushing the Tigers to a 25-23 victory. But in the final set the Hornets took full control winning 25-12.

Nunnery

The game also served as a homecoming for Hays native Tasiah Nunnery. Nunnery, who grew up in Hays and played for Hays High School, started her collegiate career at Barton County Community College before signing to play for the Hornets.

“I always wanted to play for Fort Hays, but Emporia had me out for a visit and I loved being there,” Nunnery said.

Nunnery is not the only one of her siblings to compete inside GMC. Her brother Isaiah was a part of the FHSU men’s basketball team from 2016-2019.

“It was cool to see all of my family here, I have always had a large fanbase because my family is so big but it was nice to see them here,” Nunnery said. “I have always liked this gym, even when coming to watch my brother and other events.”

Nunnery finished the match with a team-high 16 digs to go along with five kills and one service ace.

The Tigers will take to the road for their weekend series, as they travel to Pittsburg State on Friday. Then FHSU will take on the #21 Central Oklahoma on Saturday.
