Mares’ hat trick lifts women’s soccer

By FHSU SPORTS INFORMATION

The Fort Hays State women’s soccer team improved to 2-0-0 on the season after
an offensive outburst against Southwestern College on Saturday (Sep. 2) by a score of 4-0.
Senior forward Hannah Mares recorded a hat trick for the Tigers. The loss dropped the
Moundbuilders to 0-3-1 on the season. Fort Hays State dominated the possession battle and
was able to fire off 27 shots throughout the match, 13 on goal.

It did not take the Tiger offense long at all to get going on Saturday afternoon as Sullivan Kelly
netted her first goal of the season just over a minute into the match. The goal recorded from
Kelly came via a corner kick, spinning the ball to perfection to find the bottom right corner of
the net. Seventeen minutes later Hannah Mares cashed in on her first of three goals on the day
to stretch the advantage to 2-0. Fort Hays State had many more scoring opportunities in the
first period, shooting 15 shots during the first period of play.

Three minutes into the second period Hannah Mares struck again for another goal off an assist
from Sullivan Kelly. The defense continued to stay solid after the halftime break, making it hard
for the Moundbuilders to get quality possessions. In the 58′ Montserrat Diaz was able to find
Hannah Mares in the box to secure just the third hat track in program history. The most recent
three goal performance came back on September 1 st , 2018 by Chloe Montano. Mares’ three
goals also ties a program single game record for most goals scored in a match.

Keeper Isabel Robben recorded one save on the afternoon as the Tiger defense only allowed
three shots in the match.

The Tigers will have a few days off before hosting two more home matches next weekend. Fort
Hays State will first welcome Sioux Falls on Friday (Sep. 8) at 6 p.m. before facing off against
Augustana on Sunday (Sep. 10) at 1 p.m.
