Tennis rolls by Tabor

HILLSBORO, Kan. – Fort Hays State Tennis finished the week 2-0 after defeating Tabor College on the road Saturday afternoon (Mar. 4). The Tigers won all of their matches on the day, rolling them to back-to-back shutout wins.

The Tigers got the dual started by winning the doubles point in dominating fashion. The No. 1 pairing of Stefany Stemmer and Irina Alfonso limited their opponents to just two points on their way to a 6-2 victory. The No. 2 doubles team of Maria Paz Diaz and Grace Unruh blanked their opponents 6-0 to clinch the doubles point for the Tigers.

Fiorella Mendez (No. 1) led the way for the Tigers throughout singles play by having the largest margins of victory in her two sets, 6-1, 6-0. Unruh was not too far behind Mendez in terms of scoring margin, scoring 12 points to her opponent’s two. Heidi Lubbers (No. 3) and Hope Lubbers (No. 4) each recorded their second singles wins of the week on Saturday to complete the road sweep.

The Tigers are slated to open conference play next week with matchups against the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State on Wednesday (Mar. 8) and the Washburn Ichabods on Thursday (Mar. 9). Both conference matches will be played indoors in Kearney, Neb.
