Delta Zeta set to host ‘Dodge for a Cause’

BY JESSALYN KIRCHHOFF

FHSU Delta Zeta will host a dodgeball tournament benefiting SeriousFun Children’s Network on Saturday. The fundraiser will take place from 1:00 to 4:00 pm in Cunningham Hall Gyms 120 and 121.

Emma Palmer, vice president of Philanthropy for the Delta Zeta Chapter at Fort Hays State University, speaks on the overall purpose of events like this one at FHSU.

“Our purpose for this event is to spread awareness, as well as, fundraise for the organization, SeriousFun,” Palmer said.

SeriousFun is an organization that is dedicated to providing a program for students with serious or chronic illnesses to go out and enjoy camps. Palmer explains the importance of the camps.

“These camps allow these students to find ways to strengthen their independence, make relationships with other people that are similar to them, and enjoy activities geared toward their strengths,” she said.

More information on SeriousFun can be found on their website.

Palmer expands on the broader mission of sorority life here at FHSU.

“For those who do not know, all sororities are based on philanthropies,” she said. “Every sorority has a different philanthropy to spread awareness about, raise money for, and ultimately support. Delta Zeta’s philanthropy is hearing and speech, and we have three philanthropic partners that we support.”

She is grateful for her part in the organization.

“I am fortunate to have the opportunity of being the VP of Philanthropy, which ultimately allows me to run fundraisers just like this one,” Palmer said.

As for the tournament scheduled to take place this weekend, teams and players can expect a winning bracket and losing bracket while competing in the tournament. There will be time caps on all of the games to keep the tournament on time and on schedule.

To play in the tournament, it costs $30 per team, which equals $5 a person if divided evenly.

The champion team of the dodgeball tournament will win a $60 assortment of gift cards, which provides even more encouragement for individuals to sign up.

In order to register, one person must submit a team, which can consist of no more than six players. Although teams with less than six competitors are allowed to enter, there will be no changes in the rules of the game due to a smaller number of teammates. The price per team will also remain unchanged at $30 per team, even if the number of players varies.

While DZ is only allowed to have FHSU students participate in their fundraisers, Palmer encourages every student that is interested in signing up.

“All students are welcome; the more the merrier,” she said.

There is a QR code that can be found on the flyers around campus, for easy sign-up, or students can visit the Delta Zeta Instagram page @fhsudeltazeta to sign up.

Looking forward in the semester, Delta Zeta hosts a big fundraiser every spring semester called ‘Big Man on Campus.’ Palmer highlights the event as one of the most popular for the sorority.

“It is a highly anticipated event in which men get to participate in a light-hearted beauty pageant. The contenders have many categories to show us their talents and local professors judge and rank them,” Palmer said. “The top three winners get prizes and bragging rights for being ‘the big man on campus.’”

She encourages everyone to be on the lookout for more events hosted by Delta Zeta throughout the semester.
