After starting the season on the road in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and winning their first game and earning a draw in their second game, the Fort Hays State women’s soccer team continued their positive start to the 2022 campaign Saturday against Wayne State College (Nebr.). FHSU continued with their aggressive play and won the match 1-0.

Fort Hays started the game with five team fouls and nine shots on goal in the first half while the WSC Wildcats only had two shots in the first half. Tigers Head Coach Tyson John said the first half was a little frustrating because of the shot difference and not having a score on the board at the halftime break.

However, within the first two minutes of the half, the Tigers had a quick goal as Montserrat Diaz put the ball in the back of the net off an assist from Hannah Mares.

“I thought it was about time; we had nine shots on goal and six on target. We had our chances in the first half, but I am glad we got it done in the second half to win the game,” John said.

The Tigers’ offense did not let up the entire game as the team was on the attacking side of the field for 66 perfect of the contest.

“I think we did well to keep the ball on the attacking side of the field, and we are continually working on it,” John said. “Of course, you like to hear 66 percent of your possession is on the attacking side, but it’s better to have 76 percent.”

John said he was happy with his team’s performance as they move to 2-0-1 on the season,  At this point last year, FHSU had the same record, but John is seeing progress with his team.

“We have had a short time to work with each other, but with the work our team has been putting in, I think we are going in the right direction for this season,” he said.

The women’s soccer team will be back in action at 7 p.m. tonight against the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Rangers at FHSU Soccer Stadium.
