Battles continue in Ukraine

Wednesday marked the seventh day of conflict between the countries of Russia and Ukraine and featured violence, immense destruction and surging migration numbers.

According to CNN, Vadym Boychenko, the mayor of Mariupol, stated Wednesday was the most difficult day of conflict.

Mariupol, a key port city located in southern Ukraine, faced extreme shelling from early Wednesday morning on, and immense destruction left residents of the city with no access to water and electricity. It is believed hundreds of people have been killed in the streets, according to multiple media reports.

By mid-afternoon, Russian troops had surrounded the city on three sides. It is anticipated the city will be completely surrounded by Thursday afternoon, effectively cutting it off from Kyiv and forming a connection between the Crimean peninsula and Russia.

According to the BBC, Kherson, another important port city, fell to the Russians on Wednesday, becoming the first key city to fall thus far in the seven-day conflict. Kherson’s location is highly suitable for the installation of a military base which makes the fall of the city a significant development.

Wednesday was also the first time Russia admitted any casualties in the war, reporting 498 deaths — although Ukraine estimates the death toll is closer to the thousands.

Reuters reported Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky has claimed Russia and its soldiers are attempting to erase Ukraine’s existence, its people and its history, following the fighting near the Babyn Yar, a World War II memorial to those whose lives were lost during the Holocaust.

As of Wednesday, 1 million civilians and citizens had fled in hopes of finding safety and security in the midst of chaos in their home country of Ukraine, according to the United Nations. It is anticipated the number could reach up to 4 million, creating a global immigration crisis. The people of Ukraine have fled faster, and in higher numbers, than any other group of people have this century, according to the Associated Press.

The Associated Press also reported the United Nations General Assembly condemned the actions of Russia and Putin and has demanded Russian forces leave the nation immediately following a 141-5 vote. Supporters of the vote included countries of varying political strength and size, highlighting the outpouring of support for Ukraine.

Zelensky maintains Ukraine continues to be in dire need of support from the European Union, NATO, United Nations and other international organizations and countries.
