Get your creative and research submissions ready, the 17th annual John Heinrichs Scholarly Creative Activity Days returns to Fort Hays State University.

The annual SACAD event and contests began in 2005 in celebration and honor of the works of students, faculty, and staff.

The event will be from April 18through 22 and will take place online and in person.

Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to submit their research and creative works. Submissions will be accepted beginning March 1, with a deadline of April 1.

Faculty sponsorship is required for students to be eligible for the contest.

Whitney Whitaker, interim research and scholarship coordinator in the Office of Scholarship and Sponsored Projects, is excited to see SACAD participation.

“We really love this event because we think that it highlights and really showcases how we think about, how we view scholarly and creative work at Fort Hays,” she said.

The in-person portion of the event will take place April 20.

Creative works including ceramics, sculpture, drawings, printmaking, photography, and 2D and 3D design will be exhibited from noon to 3 p.m. at the Center for Art & Design. Artist presentations will be from 1 to 3 p.m.

Research posters will be presented from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Center for Applied Technology, and oral presentations of research will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Forsyth Library.

Both empirical (data-driven) and nonempirical research submissions will be accepted.

“I think research can seem quite intimidating to undergraduate students. But even with some of our graduate students, research is not always their interest,” said Ginger Loggins, professor of journalism at FHSU. “So, I think it’s great to give them an opportunity to try something that might be a little out of their comfort zone and maybe they’ll find out that they really like it.”

Beyond the possibility of a monetary award, SACAD offers students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to network and collaborate.

Steven Bolin, a school psychologist in the Hays USD 489 school district and a 2019 SACAD winner, said the event provides a learning experience for all involved.

“My favorite part of it was not only getting to present, but I think it was cool to walk around and see what other people were doing,” he said. “There were a couple of years that I picked up different ideas from other people because most people who submit something are there because they like doing research and they have ideas.”
