On-campus jobs provide opportunity, convenience for FHSU students

BY REBEKAH REED

For many college students, money is a common need at this stage of life. One easy and convenient way to add money to your bank account is by applying for a student on-campus job. Positions like office assistant, custodian, tutor, etc., are available.

Fort Hays faculty understands that school is a priority. The positions available are flexible to work with class schedules and extracurricular activities. According to Human Resource Specialist for Student Employment Johnae Blackmon, several benefits of on-campus jobs include establishing professional relationships with staff and developing references for future employment.

Dawson Savaty, an FHSU student-wroker in Forsyth Library said that working on campus is a great environment.

“It’s a pretty friendly environment,” Savaty said. “My coworkers are mostly students, so everybody is nice.”

Reesa Williams, who works at Starbucks worker reiterated Savaty’s thoughts about working on campus.

“The environment is a positive energy, and it’s fun hanging out with fun people,” Williams said

Each campus job offers different opportunities to learn different skills. You can learn to make coffee, or as said by Savaty,  you can learn something different every day. Both students said that the best perk about working on campus is being able to walk which saves money on gas.

According to Blackmon, the search process for finding an on-campus job is easy. To begin the job search: login to Workday, under apps click on Career, then Find Student Jobs. Different types of on-campus jobs are available: WorkStudy and non-WorkStudy. Any student qualifies for a non-work study job. However, not all students qualify for WorkStudy. That depends on your FAFSA results.

Read through the position descriptions of interest and take note of the required documents that are needed. Fill out and apply. Be aware that students are required to be enrolled in at least six credit hours to qualify for student employment. It is up to the department/office to decide if they want to proceed with an interview. Following up a few days after applying is encouraged because it shows initiative and a desire to work.

For all positions, an original U.S. passport or proof of citizenship, and photo ID are required. No copies are accepted.
