Track wins eight events Friday

By FHSU SPORTS INFORMATION

The Fort Hays State track and field team compiled eight first-place finishes and three provisional marks Friday (Jan. 28) between the UNK Charlie Foster Classic in Kearney, Neb. and the Washburn Open in Topeka, Kan.

After winning the 600y title at the MIAA championships last year in Topeka, Ethan Lang replicated that feat Friday with a first-place time of 1:11.83. Hayden Albright (6.95) and Philip Landrum (6.99) both moved on in the 60m dash while the sprinters finished just five-thousandths of one second apart in the 200m dash. Landrum placed 10th in 22.07 (22.062) while Albright was just a hair behind in 22.07 (22.067). Albright is now 8th on the FHSU DII era performance chart in the 200m dash.

On the women’s side in Topeka, Lyric Holman finished atop the qualifying list in the 60m dash with a time of 7.73 while placing second in the 200m dash with a time of 24.86. Taylor Savolt ran a personal-best 1:26.41 in the 600y run, placing third, with Mattie Rossi just behind in fourth with a PR of 1:27.02. The duo is now third and tied for fifth, respectively, on the DII era performance chart.

The Tigers picked up seven event wins in Kearney, including three from the women’s team and four from the men’s squad. Defending indoor national champion Alexandra Hart continued her undefeated career indoors after winning the high jump competition with a clearance of 5-5.75. Kendra Clary topped the field in the 400m dash, completing the race in 1:02.49, while Carson Pierce won the 1,000m run with a time of 3:09.36.

Xavier Robinson cleared a personal-best 23-8 in the long jump, finishing first and surpassing the NCAA provisional qualifying mark while moving up to third on the DII era performance chart. Robinson also topped the field in the 60m dash prelims with a time of 7.09 before placing second in the finals with a time of 7.13. Ryan Stanley won the pole vault for the third event in a row, clearing a provisional height of 16-6. Blake Harnden won the triple jump after clearing 45-8 on his second jump of the day, while Jama Gleue finished first in the 400m dash with a time of 53.40.

The Tigers will wrap up the weekend Saturday (Jan. 29) with 23 in day two of the Washburn Open in Topeka, with action beginning at 11 a.m.
