Wrestling splits duals in Golden

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Fort Hays State wrestling team picked up one win and one loss in dual competition on Thursday (Jan. 20), defeating Gators of San Francisco State 38-10 before falling to host Colorado School of Mines, 28-12. The Tigers are now 3-3 in dual competition this season, while the No. 21 Orediggers improve to 4-0 overall and SFSU dips to 0-7.

Tereus Henry finished the day 2-0 with a forfeit and a 7-6 decision, while Tony Caldwell won via forfeit and won an extra match with a pin to also go 2-0.

The Tigers were open at 125 pounds, giving the Gators an early advantage. But Tom VanValkenburg helped the Tigers close the gap with a 7-3 decision at 133 pounds. Cole Zebley then won via forfeit at 141 pounds, putting the Tigers ahead for good, 9-6.

Cason Lindsey never trailed in a 12-3 major decision at 149 pounds before the Gators won their only other match of the evening with a 9-1 major decision at 157 pounds. Clint Herrick (9-6 dec) and Cody Hicks (4-2 dec) both picked up wins via decisions before SFSU forfeited the final three bouts to help the Tigers complete the blowout win.

Colorado School of Mines jumped out to an early 18-0 lead after winning the first four matches, including one forfeit, one pin and two decisions. Anthony Scantlin helped the Tigers get on the board with a third-period pin at 157 pounds before Mines kept things rolling with wins the 165 pounds, 174 pounds and 184 pounds. The Tigers finished strong, however, with Henry and A.J. Cooper picking up narrow decisions to wrap up the dual.

The Tigers also wrestled a pair of extra matches against Mines, with Caldwell picking up a pin just 2:09 into the first period. Jackson Medina also made his Tiger debut at 141 pounds, falling via a first-period pin.

The Tigers will be back in action Saturday (Jan. 22) when they continue the road trip at the Midwest Duals in Kearney, Neb. FHSU is scheduled to face off with New Mexico Highlands at 11 a.m. and No. 21 Western Colorado at 1 p.m.
