Landrum, Churchman sweep MIAA weekly honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Fort Hays State men’s track and field team swept the first MIAA Athlete of the Week honors of the 2021-22 season with Philip Landrum taking the track honor and Nolan Churchman receiving the field award, announced Wednesday (Dec. 8) by the league office. Both individuals broke school records and posted NCAA DII provisional qualifying marks during the opening weekend of the season in Pittsburg, Kan.

Landrum currently holds the fastest times in Division II in both the 60m dash and the 200m dash after solid performance at the Crimson & Gold Invitational. The junior broke an 18-year-old school record in the 200m race by eight-hundredths of a second after crossing the line in 21.29. The two-time MIAA champion opened the day by improving his PR in the 60m dash by seven-hundredths of a second, moving up to second on the FHSU DII era performance chart with a time of 6.73. This is the second MIAA athlete of the week honor Landrum has received in his time as a Tiger.

Churchman broke the school record in the heptathlon at the Boo Rogers Combined Events, compiling 5,304 points across the seven disciplines. He currently sits in second nationally in Division II and is the only MIAA athlete to clear the provisional mark so far this season. He was the first Tiger to ever surpass 3,000 points on the first day of competition The second-year freshman nearly cleared the provisional threshold in the long jump after a leap of 23-4 to sit in eighth in Division II and second in the conference. He posted PRs in all seven disciplines.

The Tigers will look to build on a strong opening weekend when they compete in the UNK Pre-Holiday Classic on Friday (Dec. 10).
