Wrestling places nine at meet

CRETE, Neb. – The Fort Hays State wrestling team competed in the Conner/Oppenheim Doane Open in Crete, Neb. on Saturday (Dec. 4). Out of the 13 varsity wrestlers that competed, nine placed in their individual weight classes with one runner up, three third place, one fourth place, three fifth place, and one sixth place.

Broderick Green and Tom VanValkenburg placed fifth and sixth in the 125 weight class, respectively. Both wrestlers received a first-round bye. Green fell in the quarterfinals by technical fall 24-7 and then worked his way to the consolation semifinals with wins by major decision 10-2 and a 17-0 technical fall. He fell in the semis by an 8-0 major decision. VanValkenberg would win his quarterfinal match by fall in 5:00 before falling in the semifinals by 18-0 technical fall. VanValkenberg would be pinned in the consolation semifinals in 2:16. In the fifth-place match, Green would prevail over VanValkenberg by fall in 2:48.

Cole Zebley finished fourth in the 141 weight class after beginning the day with a loss by fall in 6:10. He worked his way up the backside with wins by forfeit, major decision 20-9, decision 6-3, and decision 11-9 to find himself in the third-place match. He would forfeit the match to finish fourth.

Cason Lindsey finished as the runner-up in the 149 class after receiving a first-round bye and winning his next three matches by fall in 4:42, sudden victory 3-1, and a medical forfeit in the semifinals. Lindsey would fall by decision 12-5 to Alek Martin of South Dakota State in the championship match earning him the silver finish.

Anthony Scantlin finished fifth in the 157 weight class after winning his first match by major decision 11-2. He was pinned in the next round in 6:36, but worked his way up the consolation side winning by fall in 5:36 and 3-0 decision to make it to the consolation semis. Scantlin would drop this match by 13-3 major decision and claim the fifth-place finish due to a medical forfeit by Chinges Tsermaa from Doane.

Marty Verhaeghe and Tereus Henry finished third in the 184 and 197 weight classes, respectively. Verhaeghe found himself in the semifinals after two major decisions (13-3, 11-0) and a decision in the quarterfinals. He suffured his lone loss in sudden victory in the semifinals, 8-4. Verhaeghe wrapped up the day with a 7-3 decision and a 5-3 sudden victory to pick up a third-place finish. Henry made his way to the semifinals with a bye in the first round and a win by 6-3 decision. He fell in the semifinal by decision 3-0. Henry would advance to the third-place match on a forfeit and end the day with a 10-4 decision to claim the bronze.

A.J. Cooper and Tony Caldwell finished third and fifth, respectively, in the 285 weight class. Both wrestlers won their first-round matches, Cooper by 20-1 technical fall and Caldwell by 10-4 decision. Cooper would fall in the second round by a 4-2 decision. Caldwell would win his quarterfinal in a 6-2 decision before dropping his semifinal match by fall. Cooper would find his way to the consolation semifinals to face off with Caldwell with wins by fall in 6:57 and decision 7-2. Cooper would win the match by major decision 9-1 and take third place with a 1-0 decision. Caldwell would claim a fifth-place finish due to a forfeit.
