Late penalty save earns Tigers 2-1 win

By FHSU SPORTS INFORMATION

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Men’s Soccer held on for a 2-1 win at Rockhurst University on Sunday (Sept. 12). Blake Arndt provided all of the Tiger scoring and Kieran Brown made a massive save on a penalty kick by the Hawks with 30 seconds remaining in the contest. FHSU moved to 2-1-1 on the season with the win, while Rockhurst fell to 1-3.

The Tigers received a golden scoring opportunity early in the match when Blake Arndt was held inside the penalty box trying to make a play on the ball. The foul produced a yellow card and a penalty kick opportunity for Arndt, who cashed in and put the Tigers up 1-0 in the 4th minute of the game.

The Hawks leveled the contest at one goal apiece in the 62nd minute on a strike from Alessandro Macchioni just outside the top of the box after the Tigers tried to clear the ball from danger. However, about seven minutes later the Tigers took the lead once again when a free kick by Antonio De La Torre found the foot of Arndt who redirected the ball into the right corner of the goal in the 69th minute.

The match finished dead even in shots (13), shots on goal (5), and saves (4) by the goalkeepers. Brown picked up his second win of the season by laying out and stopping the penalty kick awarded to Rockhurst’s Jordan Andrews. The Tiger defense cleared any sort of stick back opportunity off the save.

The Tigers now turn their attention to a road trip to Wichita Falls, Texas next weekend (Sept. 16-18) where they will face Texas A&M-International and Colorado Mesa in a pair of neutral site matches, hosted by Midwestern State University. It will be the final two matches for FHSU before entering GAC play for the remainder of the season on September 25.
