Tennis opens with win against Hastings

HASTINGS, Neb. – Fort Hays State Tennis opened its 2021 season with a 7-0 win over Hastings College in Nebraska on Saturday (Mar. 6). The Tigers swept all nine matches contested and even won both exhibition matches in singles play.

In doubles action, Grace Holgerson and Sydney McAdoo teamed up at the No. 2 position to post a 6-0 shutout. Stefany Stemmer and Fiorella Mendez were victorious in their first collegiate match for the Tigers, also scoring a 6-0 shutout of their opponent at the No. 1 position. With the single team point already in hand by winning two doubles matches, the Tigers made it a clean sweep when the No. 3 team of Kylie Aufdengarten and Kimberly Stone won 6-4.

The Tigers won all singles matches in straight sets to add on six team points. Aufdengarten at the No. 6 position allowed the fewest points to her opponent, winning 6-1, 6-0. Stemmer won 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 1 position and Mendez showed consistency with a pair of 6-1 scores at the No. 2 position. McAdoo was also consistent by winning 6-2 in both sets at the No. 3 position. Holgerson won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 and Aliyah Frederick notched a victory in her first collegiate match, also 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 5 position. Stone played an exhibition singles match and won 8-0, while Frederick also played an exhibition singles match and won 8-1.

The Tigers are scheduled to return to action on Thursday, March 11 at Tabor College.
