Fort Hays State Men’s Basketball returns to action on its home floor Thursday night (Feb. 6) to host Newman University. This is the first of two regular season meetings between the teams. The Tigers enter at 9-11 overall, 2-9 in the MIAA, while the Jets are 8-14 overall, 2-11 in the MIAA.

The Tigers are looking for their first three-game win streak of the season on Thursday night. FHSU began its current four-game home stand with wins over Kansas Wesleyan and Nebraska-Kearney last week.

FHSU held a five-game win streak in the series with Newman until last year. The Jets edged the Tigers in a non-conference game in Wichita, 76-75. There were 18 lead changes in that game and Newman scored the final two points with five seconds remaining at the free-throw line.

Jared Vitztum continues to lead FHSU in scoring and rebounding, averaging 13.4 points and 7.7 rebounds per game respectively. Devin Davis is the only other Tiger averaging double figures in scoring at 10.1 points per game. The Tigers are one of the top free-throw shooting teams in the nation at 78.8 percent, which ranks 14th in NCAA Division II.

Marshawn Blackmon leads the Jets in scoring and rebounding, averaging 16.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. He had the pair of free throws that lifted the Jets to victory over the Tigers in Wichita last year.
