Jones, Henry victorious at Bob Smith Open

By FHSU SPORTS INFORMATION

Two wrestlers from the No. 19 Fort Hays State wrestling team took first place at the FHSU-Bob Smith Open Saturday (Dec. 7), with nine other Tigers earning a spot in the top four. Aryus Jones finished the day 3-0 to take home the title at 184 pounds, while Tereus Henry won all three of his matches to win the 197-pound bracket.

123 wrestlers representing 13 schools took part in the annual event inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. Air Force Prep took home three titles, while Newman joined Fort Hays State with two individual champs. Central Oklahoma, Adams State and Oklahoma State all had one wrestler win his respective bracket.

It was the first time this decade the Tigers have had multiple champions at the Bob Smith Open.

Broderick Green placed fourth at 125 pounds after a 2-2 afternoon. He advanced to the semifinals with back-to-back wins via pin before dropping his next two matches.

Dy’Juan Carney finished third at 133 pounds after a 2-1 afternoon. The redshirt-senior dropped his first match before bouncing back to win two matches on the backside, one via pin in the first minute and another on a 6-3 decision.

Conrad Cole earned a second-place finish at 133 pounds thanks to a pin in the first round. Cole moved on to the championship bout with an exciting sudden victory takedown before finishing the day 2-1.

Jonathan Ball went 3-1 on the day to place third at 149 pounds. He advanced to the semifinals after a major decision over Jarod Kadel of Oklahoma State before moving to the backside. Ball won via tech fall in the consolation semifinals before taking an unblemished 6-0 decision in the third-place match.

Anthony Scantlin was one of two Tigers to earn four victories on the day, finishing third at 157 pounds thanks to a 4-1 performance. The sophomore won his first match with a second period pin before falling to Chance McLane of Oklahoma State to move to the consolation bracket. Scantlin wrapped up the afternoon with three-straight wins, picking up one pin, one tech fall and one decision in the process.

Marty Verhaeghe finished fourth at 174 pounds after posting a 3-2 record. The junior won his first two matches to advance to the semifinals before falling to eventual champ Noah Blake of Air Force Prep. Verhaeghe moved on to the third-place match after pinning Wyatt Hayes of Nebraska-Kearney.

Aryus Jones cruised through the 184-pound bracket, finishing 3-0 to win his second tournament of the season. Jones won in the quarterfinals with a pin before moving on to the championship bout after a major decision. The sophomore earned the title after a 6-2 win over Nate Panagakis of Newman.

Tyler Boone tied for the team lead with four wins en route to a third-place finish at 197 pounds. The redshirt-freshman advanced to the semifinals after back-to-back pins before dropping his only bout of the day. Boone bounced back with another victory via pin before earning a major victory in the third-place match.

Tereus Henry earned his second championship of the season at 197 pounds after a perfect 3-0 afternoon. The freshman won all three matches via pin, including two first period falls and a second period pin in the title match against Andrew Demos of Nebraska-Kearney.

A.J. Cooper and Jordan Davis both finished 2-1 on the day at 285 pounds, with all four wins coming via pin. The pair elected to forgo their matchup in the third-place bout.

The Tigers will wrap up the 2019 portion of their schedule next weekend when they travel to Indianapolis, Ind. for the 41st annual Midwest Classic. Competition at the University of Indianapolis is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, December 14-15.
