HHS girls suffer first loss

The Hays High School girls’ basketball team headed into the semifinal game of the Hays City Shootout on Friday night facing the Olathe West Owls.

Olathe West sent the Indians into the consolation finals with a 60-39 victory.

The Owls came out with a hard press, making it difficult for the Indians to recover on offense — only scoring six points in the first quarter while trailing 15-6 after the first eight minutes. Olathe West didn’t back down, only letting Hays High score nine point in the second quarter to build a 29-15 lead at halftime.

The Indians came out a little slow after the half but battled the whole third quarter, easing in on Olathe West’s lead but still trailed 50-28 entering the final period.

The Indians will face Manhattan in the third-place game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

A new face paced the Indians in scoring, as Carley Lang finished with 13 points. Tasiah Nunnery follow with 12 points, and Brooklyn Schaffer finished with 11.
