Fort Hays State scored its first basket 45 seconds into the game and never looked back in a 106-57 blowout over Sterling College on Saturday (Nov. 30). The Tigers never trailed and moved to 4-2 overall on the season. Sterling is 2-8 overall.
The Tigers built a 48-22 lead by halftime as Jake Hutchings nearly had a double-double by halftime with 15 points and eight rebounds. He would pick up the double-double in the second half, going on to finish with 20 points and 13 rebounds. The Tigers shot a strong 54.8 percent from the field in the opening half, while limiting the Warriors to 27.3 percent.
The Tigers scored 10 more points in the second half than in the first with a 58-35 margin after the break. The shooting cooled a bit, but the Tigers had 12 more shot attempts in the second half. They finished at 48.6 percent for the game, while the Warriors finished at 32.4 percent. FHSU was rock solid at the free-throw line once again, shooting 91.3 percent as a team with a 21-of-23 effort.
Alvin Thompson scored 15 of his team-high 23 points in the second half. He was 7-of-12 from the field, including a 5-of-7 effort beyond the 3-point line, and 4-of-4 at the charity stripe. Hutchings finished at 7-of-11 from the field with a perfect 3-of-3 effort beyond the 3-point line. He was 3-of-4 at the line. In addition to Hutchings, Jared Vitztum and Gilbert Peters nearly produced double-doubles. Vitztum had 15 points and eight rebounds, while Peters had 10 points and nine rebounds. The Tigers dominated the glass, winning the rebounding battle 53-36. Devin Davis dished out a team-high seven assists. As a team, the Tigers canned a season-high 13 three-point field goals.
Rylee Hayes led the Sterling scoring effort with 14 points, followed by Saleem Holden and Lucas Briar each with 10.
Fort Hays State opens MIAA play on Tuesday (Dec. 3) when it heads to Kearney, Nebraska. FHSU and rival Nebraska-Kearney are set to tip at 7:30 pm inside the Health and Sports Center.
