On September 30, members of the Fort Hays Honors Society community service committee gathered together to perform an act of community service, by picking up trash around campus. Members worked as a team to clean up common gathering areas, as well as residential areas for FHSU students.

FHHS is composed of many different committees. Students have the opportunity to participate in whichever committee they want to. Many of the members of FHHS that chose to partake in the community service committee did so because of all of the benefits community service has to offer.

Students, such as Sydney Devlin, joined FHHS for a chance to help others. Devlin is a part of the community service committee, as well as the Assistant Vice President of Finance.

“I joined the community service committee because there is nothing more satisfying at the end of the day than knowing I have done my part to strengthen the community, ” Devlin said. “There are a lot of problems going on in today’s world; I would not only like to avoid contributing to those problems but also help in resolving them.”

The goal of the community service committee is to get as many members as possible involved in activities that benefit others, at least once a month. Cleaning up the campus trash was the activity for the month of September.

“Community service is my opportunity to give back…I know that every good deed makes a positive impact on the world,” Devlin said.

The honors society and community service committee plan to help with many upcoming events in the future. For the month of October, the members plan to volunteer at the Purple Lights Night event and the Swipe Out Hunger event.

“We’ve got some great project ideas for this year and I can’t wait to see what we accomplish,” Devlin said.
