SGA Holds Weekly Meeting

STORY BY CORIE LYNN

At Thursday’s Student Government Association meeting, the senators read and voted on several bills, including the Education Opportunity Fund (EOF).

The meeting began with executive reports.

President Adam Schibi stated that, including a presentation on Open Educational Resources (OERs) and meetings regarding the EOF bill, he and University President Tisa Mason signed the new allocation bill.

Vice President Kirschbaum said that she was involved with a Provost Search Committee interview.

Community Relations Director Dougherty’s report included an update on the progress of the Big Event.

According to her, volunteers no longer have the option of participating in both the morning and afternoon shifts because there will be fewer service projects than originally expected.

CRD Dougherty also said that the SGA is considering hosting next year’s Landlord Fair earlier in the second semester.

Of the committee that gave reports during the evening, many, including the Appropriations and OER Task Force committees, stated that they had bills and resolutions up for first readings.

The Student Relations & Involvement Committee also stated that they were in the process of sorting through volunteers for the Big Event, while the Elections Committee announced that campaigns for next year’s SGA positions are underway.

Following the committee reports, six new bills and two resolutions were read for the first time.

Many of these bills were concerning fees. This included the Annual Fee Review, the Bi-annual Fee Review, the Tiger Media Network Fee, Memorial Union Fee and the Student Government Fee.

The two resolutions read were concerning OERs and the March Student Leader of the Month.

The SGA then passed four old bills, two of which allocated money for individuals who attended a writing conference in Pittsburgh, PA.

A bill to appropriate money to the Sociology Club to travel to Chicago for their annual meeting was also passed.

The last bill the senators passed that evening was the EOF bill, which provides funding to campus organizations.

Senators gave announcements before the close of the meeting. This included announcements about the upcoming Student Organization Banquet and a Criminal Justice Club scholarship fundraiser.

The Student Senate will reconvene April 11 at 7:00 in the evening.
