Women look to clinch title outright

By FHSU SPORTS INFORMATION

The fourth-ranked Fort Hays State women’s basketball team heads to Tahlequah, Okla. Saturday afternoon (Feb. 23) with a chance to win the outright MIAA regular season championship. First tip between the Tigers and RiverHawks is set for 1:30 p.m. from the NSU Event Center.

After clinching at least a share of the conference title with their win over Central Oklahoma Thursday, the Tigers need just one win over their final three games to win the trophy outright. Fort Hays State has already secured the No. 1 seed in the 2019 MIAA Championship tournament.

A win Saturday would be Fort Hays State’s 10th consecutive victory, giving the Tigers multiple non-consecutive double-digit winning streaks for just the second time in team history (1990-91). The Tigers have had 11 10+ winning streaks all-time.

Fort Hays State has dominated the all-time series with NSU, winning 12 of the 15 contests including 11 straight victories. The Tigers are 4-2 all-time in Tahlequah, including wins in four consecutive road games. FHSU is 12-2 overall and 4-2 on the road against the RiverHawks under head coach Tony Hobson.

Tatyana Legette has averaged a double-double in her last five games against NSU (11.4p, 10.6r), while Lanie Page has scored 10.3 points per game in three matchups with the RiverHawks.

Northeastern State heads into Saturday 6-19 overall and 3-13 in MIAA action. The RiverHawks need at least two wins over their final three games to have a chance to climb into 10th in the MIAA standings, therefore securing a trip to KC for the MIAA Tournament. NSU ranks 13th in scoring offense in the league with 63.7 points per game while they rank 12th in scoring defense with 68.0 points allowed per contest. They are the second-best free throw shooting team in the league, knocking down 76.1 percent from the charity stripe. Cenia Hayes leads the team in scoring (13.3 ppg), assists (2.8 apg) and steals (1.9 spg).

After Thursday’s win, the Tigers are 9-5 in the Sooner State under Hobson.
