Wrestling drops first MIAA dual of season

EDMOND, Okla. – The No. 16 ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team took to the mat against rival Central Oklahoma on Friday (Dec. 7). The Tigers fell to the Bronchos in the first MIAA dual of the season for FHSU, 35-5.

Broderick Green dropped the opening bout to Noah McQuigg 5-3. Conrad Cole battled Cody Karstetter for three periods before falling to him by an 8-3 decision. FHSU trail UCO 6-0 after two bouts.

No. 4 ranked Brandon Ball put the Tigers on the board at 141-pounds after defeating Nate Keim with a 6-0 decision to improve to 9-0 on the year. Wyatt Alvis took the mat for the Tigers in the 149-pound bout but was outdueled by Brik Filippo for a 21-4 technical fall defeat. UCO lead 11-3 after the first four matches.

No. 4 ranked Efe Osaghae put some life back into the Tigers as he picked up a late takedown in the third period of the 157-pound bout to defeat Dayton Garrett with a 5-4 decision. In the 165-pound dual, Aryus Jones fell to Wyatt Jordan in the first period, 2:34. The Bronchos led the Tigers 17-6, with four bouts to go.

Seniors Nick Meck (174 pounds) and Micquille Robinson (184 pounds) battled to the end of their matches, before Miguel Barreras (174 pounds) defeated Meck by 12-7 decision and Heath Gray pinned Robinson with 20 seconds to go in the bout.

UCO continued their strong statement with a fall from Colton Looper over Tiger Jordan Davis at 197 pounds, before A.J. Cooper fell to Blake Berryhill, 11-5, in the final bout of the evening in the 285-pound weight class.

The Tigers regroup for the Jet Invitational on Sunday (Dec. 9) in Wichita, Kan. The tournament is slated to commence at 9 a.m.
