Fort Hays State women’s tennis head coach Brian Flax has announced three student-athletes who have signed to join the program for the 2019-20 season. The three signees include freshmen from the state of Kansas, with two from Salina and one from Wichita.
Grace Holgerson joins the Tigers from Salina Central High School who boasts a career record of 100-26. Holgerson, who will major in education, was a four-year letter-winner at Salina Central. Holgerson helped her Mustangs to three regional team titles in her career, while also finishing in the top seven at the 5A state championships in all four years.
Holgerson was a part of a Salina Central program that claimed three Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League titles. Individually, Holgerson was a two-time AVCTL doubles champion and two-time regional runner up in doubles. She finished fourth in 5A doubles as a junior and seventh as a senior.
“We are extremely happy to get a player with Grace’s talent. She will be a great asset to our program,” said coach Flax.
Katherine Sherman comes to the Tigers from Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School in Wichita, Kan. The four-year letter-winner compiled a record of 42-15 during her last two seasons. In the Kansas District of USTA, Sherman was ranked No. 8 in singles. Sherman led her KMC team to a runner-up finish in the 5A state tourney in 2018.
“Katherine comes to us from a high school with a lot of tradition. We are fortunate to have her join in our program,” said coach Flax.
Sydney McAdoo is another signee that comes to the Tigers via Salina as a product of Salina South. McAdoo collected a 110-46 record during her high school career, putting her as the Cougar with the second-most wins in program history. As a sophomore, McAdoo led Salina South to its first-ever AVCTL title while individually being named to the All-AVCTL team three times.
At the state level, McAdoo placed three times at the 5A tournament including a sixth-place finish as a senior in doubles. As a team, Salina South finished third during her senior year, the first top-three finish for the program. Megan Kingry, McAdoo’s assistant coach at Salina South, is a former FHSU tennis player.
“Sydney has a strong baseline game with great doubles instincts. I look forward to watching her game improve over the next four years,” said coach Flax.
