The Kansas National Guard will fly out to Fort Hays State University on Sept. 26 to conduct an orientation flight.

Community members will be flying aboard UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, flown by Kansas National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation.

The UH-60 Black Hawk is the helicopter known as the aerial workhorse of the Kansas Army National Guard. The four-blade, twin engine, medium-lift utility helicopter is used for many different things such as soldier and equipment transport, medical evacuation, ground troop support and other missions.

The different flights are part of the Kansas National Guard’s Community Connect program to help provide more awareness of the Guard, the people and their roles they play to help protect the security, health and safety of the residents of Kansas.

The helicopters are expected to land on the intramural fields south of Gross Memorial Coliseum. The general public will not be able to take flights on the helicopters.

The Black Hawks have been used in the past few years to also help contain out-of-control wildfires in the spring in the state.
