“Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi” Rundown

BY JADEN MOUNT

With carbon-frozen Captain Han Solo in the possession of Jabba the Hutt, Luke Skywalker and his friends plan to rescue their frozen friend while the Galactic Empire secretly constructs the even more powerful second Death Star.

Darth Vader arrives on the uncompleted battle station, informing the station commander that progress is lacking and Emperor Sheev Palpatine, aka Darth Sidious, will be arriving soon.

On the desert world Tatooine, droid units C3-PO and R2-D2 arrive at Jabba’s Palace where a recorded message from Luke Skywalker is played. The message requests an audience for Solo’s life as well as gifts the two droid units to the crime lord. Jabba takes the droid but declares there will be no bargain as Solo is his favorite decoration.

A bounty hunter arrives at the palace, with Chewbacca in chains. The Wookie is given to Jabba for a higher price than the original bounty. During the night, the hunter unfreezes Solo and reveals herself to be Princess Leia Organa. Jabba and his company find out the two, imprisoning Solo with Chewbacca and forcing Leia to become his new entertainer.

Skywalker arrives the next day, using his new Jedi powers to gain entrance into the palace. The powers do not work on Jabba, who activates the trap door to the deadly Rancor. Skywalker manages to kill the beast, angering the crime lord incredibly. Chewbacca, Skywalker, and Solo are brought before Jabba. The three prisoners are then sentenced to be digested for over a thousand years by the Sarlacc.

Once brought to the pit, the party, along with help from R2-D2 and a disguised Lando Calrissian, escape capture and begin to fight off Jabba’s criminals. Organa, using her chains, chokes Jabba to death while Calrissian secure Solo and Chewbacca. Before departing the area, both droid units are recovered while the barge is destroyed over the sand dunes. Skywalker and R2-D2 return to Dagobah as the rest of the party rendezvous with the Rebel Fleet.

Meanwhile, Emperor Palpatine arrives at the second Death Star along with a heavy contingent of the Imperial Navy and a legion of stormtroopers. The emperor senses Vader’s interest in finding Skywalker but states the boy will find his father first.

Skywalker arrives on Dagobah to find a dying Master Yoda. He tells Skywalker the final step in completing his path is to confront his father, Vader. Yoda’s body disappears after his death, similar to Kenobi on the first Death Star. The force ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi appears and tells the story of Anakin Skywalker. It is also revealed that Leia Organa is his secret twin sister.

Aboard the Rebel flagship Home I, the contingent commanders and generals are debriefed about the construction of the second Death Star and of the shield generator, based on the forest moon of Endor, that protects in the inoperable station. Solo, Chewbacca, Organa, C3-PO, R2-D2, and a strike force of Rebel troops are dispatched to deal with the generator, along with Skywalker who joins shortly after. The now-General Calrissian will serve as Gold Squadron Leader on the Millenium Falcon in the eventual attack on the station.

The party manages to land on the moon with a stolen Imperial shuttle, but both Skywalker and Vader sense each other’s presence. Vader returns to Sidious, who tells him to wait for the boy to reveal himself first. A few scout troopers cause confusion for the Rebels, causing Organa to meet with the Ewoks, the primitive indigenous species. Skywalker reveals to Organa that Vader is his father as well as they are twin siblings, before leaving to surrender to Imperial forces.

Vader takes Skywalker to the emperor while the strike team captures and begins planting detonators around the generator. An Imperial Legion recaptures the generator as the Rebel Fleet arrives. Calrissian discovers the shield is still up, ordering the fleet to turn around. However, a majority of the Imperial fleet blocks any escape, trapping the Rebel between them and the battle station. As the strike team is taken outside, C3-PO and R2-D2 call over Imperial troops to them when the Ewoks attack. A massive ground battle takes place around the generator, while the Imperials seal the doors to prevent Rebel destruction.

Sidious provokes Skywalker to attack him, but Vader responds, resulting in the second duel between father and son. The combined Rebel and Ewok force are able to overpower the Imperial Legion and destroy the generator, collapsing the protective shield around the Death Star. Calrissian and Red Squadron Wedge Antilles lead the attack run into the station’s main reactor. Skywalker refuses to fight Vader any longer but is provoked by the thought of his sister turning to the Dark Side.

The son beats down his mechanical father and is commanded by the emperor to strike the Sith Lord down. Skywalker refuses to do so, resulting in Sidious using force lightning on the Jedi Knight. Vader changes sides, tossing the emperor over the rails to his death. Calrissian and Antilles make it to the Death Star’s main reactor and destroy it. Skywalker pulls his dying father to a shuttle, where the Sith Lord passes after looking upon his son with his own eyes. The Jedi escapes the station as the Rebel fleet makes for Endor’s surface. For the second time, the Rebel Alliance has destroyed the Galactic Empire’s supreme weapon.

A celebration is held by Ewoks and Rebels alike as the news of the emperor’s death spreads throughout the known galaxy and the empire slowly begins to crumble and die.
