KEARNEY, Neb. – The Fort Hays State wrestling team traveled to Kearney, Neb., on Saturday (Nov. 21) to compete in the UNK Holiday Inn Open. The Tigers turned in several good performances all and had six wrestlers place in their respective weight classes.
Ranked No. 6 in the nation at 184 pounds, Jon Inman remained undefeated and took first place in the Elite Division as he went 3-0 for the tournament. Inman defeated his first opponent, Asiah Dyer by a first round pin at 1:53. Inman then handled the next two opponents easily with a decision (7-2) over Luke Paine in the semifinals and a major decision (14-6) over UNK’s Zach Stodden.
Brandon Ball wrestled for the Tigers at 141 pounds and placed second in the amateur division. Ball went 4-1 on the way to a second-place finish. Three of his four wins came by major decision before dropping the championship match against Nebraska’s Collin Purinton by a 9-4 decision.
Four other Tigers took home sixth-place honors in their respective divisions. Cash Drylie (Elite 197), Rakim Dean(Amateur 184), Christian Lance (Amateur 197), and Justin Scott (Amateur 285).
Next up for the Tigers is the FHSU-Bob Smith Open as they host the annual event in Hays, Kan. on Sunday (Dec. 6).
