Obama says Ebola-fighting goal is to prevent any new cases

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is citing major gains in fighting the Ebola outbreak in West Africa and says the goal now is to prevent any new cases.

Obama was meeting Wednesday with the presidents of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone to get a handle on the current situation.

Ebola has killed more than 10,000 people in the yearlong-plus outbreak. But Obama says there were fewer than 40 cases in the region last week.

The United States was part of an international effort to confront Ebola. At its height, there were fears of a much wider outbreak.

Obama says the three African countries at the center of the outbreak need to have their health systems rebuilt and their economies restored.
