First Sternberg Outbound Excursion planned

Sternberg Museum Outbound is a new science education travel program kicking off with a journey to Denver to learn about fossils, paleontology, and the ages old science of making beer.

Beginning on Friday, December 12 at 3:30pm, participants will begin the adventure at the Sternberg Museum with a meet-and-greet plus behind the scenes fossil collections tour with Dr. Laura Wilson. Participants will get to see the world-class fossil research collection at the Sternberg Museum, find out what goes into its curation, and learn why fossil collections are critical to answering many important scientific questions faced today.

Following the journey through the Sternberg fossil collections, participants will head over to Defiance Brewery for a chat with the brewmasters about the science of what goes in to making a great beer concluding the evening with a group dinner at Gella’s Diner and Brewery before loading into the van for the drive to Denver.

On Saturday, December 13, participants will get a behind the scenes tour of the fossil collections at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science . They will have a chance to ask questions and learn about the history of life recorded in the rocks of Colorado and get a chance to see more of the process of maintaining a fossil collection. Museum education staff will make a point of discussing the differences and similarities in the fossil record between Kansas and Colorado through time.

Following the visit to the Denver Museum, participants will have a chance to meet with the Brewmaster at De Steeg Brewery, who is trained as a mechanical engineer, and is excited to sit down and talk brew science.

The brewing science tour will continue on Sunday, December 14th with visits and behind the scenes tours plus meetings with brewers at breweries in Boulder and Denver, including Avery, Crooked Stave, and River North breweries.
