With the plethora of meet-and-greet events that have adorned the new year, Forsyth Library did not disappoint.

On Wednesday, the library put on its first Crafternoon event. From 2 to 5 p.m., students could put their creativity to the test at a handful of crafting tables. The creations students made included personalized megaphones, reading magnets, green-screen videos, bookmarks and trail mix.

The library also partnered with Makerspace to allow students to create keychains using Makerspace’s laser cutter.

Anna Towns, the newly hired library engagement specialist, described how Crafternoon came to be.

“We were brainstorming some fun ways to get people into the library early in the semester so they’re familiar with the space,” she said.

Towns’ goal is to get new students familiar with the library.

“I think it is important to get people into the library, to know what we have available,” she said. “We have librarians on staff all the time who can help when you need research. … The Writing Center’s here, the Makerspace, media lab. All these components make it more than just checking out a book.”

With 40 Days at the Fort in swing, Crafternoon won’t be the only thing interesting to new students.
